Chopping

.
Veggies lie on the

Chopping block never knowing

When the knife will fall.

Coincidental haiku by a North Vietnamese soldier after fierce fighting with no end in sight in 1965.
Michael and I were watching the Ken Burns series on the Vietnam War. This poem was quoted in Episode 3. Even though it was written in Vietnamese, it works in English as well. With poetic license in order to match the photo with the words, I changed “The crab lies” to “Veggies lie.”

Visit Urban Nature, a small collection of Barbara’s haiku juxtaposed onto her photos,
available for purchase as fine art prints suitable for framing.
