Music is probably the only real magic I have encountered in my life.
There’s not some trick involved with it. It’s pure and it’s real.
It moves, it heals, it communicates…  ~ Tom Petty

Ground:   A solo, notes, singing
Light:        A chorus, chords, harmonizing

As I’ve been watching the impeachment proceedings, the following dream I had years ago came to my mind. As a result of remembering this dream, I’ve been wondering what it might be like if the currently acrimonious members of Congress chose to sing to each other and sought ways to harmonize rather than angrily yelling at each other.

A wizened old man approached me and asked, “Would you be willing to sing a song with me?”

“Yes, of course! I am honored,” I said with excitement and humility.

Then he sang his song for me. It was beautiful, poignant, and mesmerizing. I told him that I truly appreciated it and said that I would be delighted to sing it in unison with him.

He said, “No. That’s not enough. Harmony is not unison. Rather, it is complement. And even more,” he went on, “ours are different songs, yours and mine. sEach person’s song has unique notes and words. In fact, our songs are so different that we might assume that they would not harmonize with each other. However, I promise you, your song blends in harmony with mine. And when we sing our songs together, the combination constitutes a blessed and holy gift.”

So I devoted myself fully to learning to sing my singular song. On faith.

Then it was time for us to sing together. Alchemically, singing our different songs at the same time constituted an enchantment that completely overwhelmed ‘The Enemy.’

Then I woke up. Or sort of, at least. I wasn’t really awake but I also I wasn’t sleeping any more. As I reflected on the dream in my half-awake, half-asleep state, I wondered about ‘The Enemy.’  Who and/or what? Where and when? Why? And then I also wondered what might happen if ‘The Enemy’ was able to truly listen to and experience the heavenly nature of our different but harmonized songs.  And maybe, someday, even sing with us.

About the Stones

BirthSongs offer a gift of earth’s natural and precious beauty for a child’s birth or birthday. Not only are BirthSongs beautiful, but they also assist a child in becoming well-grounded and contented in body and soul.

There is a story of an indigenous people who, prior to the birth of a child, listen until they ‘hear’ the song of the new arrival’s soul.  This song is sung at the birth of the infant, at every major life transition, and at the person’s death. Also, if the person strays or errors in some way, the people of the community sing the person’s song to help him or her remember who he or she REALLY is. For, “The tribe recognizes that the correction for antisocial behavior is not punishment; it is love and the remembrance of identity. When you recognize your own song, you have no desire or need to do anything that would hurt another.” Read more….
